- Pattern programming. A computer flat knitting machine needs a program per construction, with adjustments and test panels for gauge and sizes.
- Machine setup and changeover. Threading yarn, setting tension and running test panels takes line time that produces nothing.
- Yarn dye lots. Dye houses charge per lot and per color; custom shades carry minimum weights and small-lot surcharges.
- Trim minimums. Custom buttons, zips, cords and labels have their own supplier minimums, separate from your garment count.
- Sample development. A spec sample, washed fit sample and pre-production sample are all part of bringing a style into bulk.
- QC and admin. Measurement checks, final inspection, booking and export documents happen regardless of order size.
The unit-price math is simple. Each piece carries material, knitting labor and finishing costs. On top sits your share of the setup:
Total cost per piece = material + labor + finishing + (one-time setup ÷ number of pieces)
At 100 pieces the setup share is real money. At 1,000 pieces it nearly disappears. So a lower MOQ almost always means a higher unit price — not because the factory is greedy, but because the same fixed costs are divided across fewer units.
A low-MOQ factory doesn’t remove these costs. It absorbs more of them per order: scheduling small runs between bigger jobs, working from stock yarn, sharing setup across styles, and charging a unit price that covers the smaller spread. That’s the honest trade-off behind “flexible MOQ.”

Yarn. Stock yarn — already dyed and held by the factory or mill — supports small runs because there’s no custom dye lot and less inventory risk. Custom-spun or custom-dyed yarn raises the floor: the mill’s minimum applies before the factory’s does.
Color count. Each color is its own dye lot with its own minimum weight. A two-color jacquard needs two lots; a five-color fair isle needs five. In practice, color count often moves the MOQ more than style complexity does.
Size structure. Fully fashioned knitwear knits panels to shape, so each size needs grading and its own machine adjustments. A wide XS–XXL run stages more yarn per size and slows linking and finishing. Narrowing the size range keeps a small order efficient.
Style complexity. Jacquard, intarsia and heavy cables add programming time, test panels and finishing care. They affect price and sampling more than the MOQ itself, but they still add setup that has to be covered.
Trims. A custom molded button or zip pull carries its own minimum order from the trim supplier. If the trim can’t be bought from stock, treat it as a second MOQ inside your order.
Factory size and schedule. A line optimized for 5,000-piece runs can’t profitably stop for 100. - Limit colors per style. One or two colors is the cheapest first order. Use factory stock shades when you can; a custom Pantone match triggers a dye lot minimum before any knitting starts.
- Choose stock yarn. Factory or mill stock yarn removes the dye lot and the wait. It’s the single fastest way to lower both MOQ and lead time.
- Narrow the size range. Run your core sizes — often S–M–L — with a heavier ratio on the best sellers. Add edge sizes on reorders once you have sales data.
- Simplify construction on the first run. A plain or ribbed style in stock yarn is the cheapest style to approve and the fastest to produce. Move to jacquard or intarsia once the style and fit are proven.
- Combine orders in one season. Plan several styles together, share sampling rounds and group deliveries. It spreads admin across the program, and a factory that sees a repeat schedule is more willing to keep a flexible minimum.

- Spreading one style across too many colors and sizes. A 100-piece order split into four colors and five sizes leaves four pieces per SKU — below dye lots, below trim minimums, and uneconomical to link and finish. Keep the first run concentrated.
- Treating every factory’s MOQ as fixed. The number follows the spec and the factory’s setup. Switch to stock yarn, cut a color or a size, simplify the construction, and the minimum can move. Ask what changes it instead of only asking for a discount.
- Comparing MOQs that mean different things. One factory’s “100 per style” and another’s “100 per color” aren’t comparable. Compare the unit, then the factory, then the number.
