Color count. Every additional colorway is a separate dye lot, separate yarn stock, and separate production run. Four colors isn’t four times the work — but it’s not one times the work either.

Trims and details. Buttons, zippers, embroidery, and prints are usually sourced separately. A custom button with your logo can take longer than the garment itself. Decide trims early.

Sampling: the stage people underestimate

Bulk production: 15–30 working days, broken down
A bulk knitwear order moves through these stages:
- Yarn ordering and dyeing — if the yarn isn’t stock. This step happens before anything else and often runs in parallel with your final sample approval.
- Knitting — the fabric or fully-fashioned panels are knitted on the machines.
- Linking and sewing — panels are joined. Fully-fashioned styles are linked stitch-to-stitch; cut-and-sew styles are cut and sewn. Linking is skilled hand work and is usually the capacity bottleneck.
- Finishing — washing, drying, steaming, pressing, and any special treatments.
- Final inspection and packing — measurement checks, defect checks, folding, polybagging, and carton packing.

Capacity utilization. A factory running at 90% capacity quotes longer times because it’s true. A factory running at 40% quotes shorter times because it wants the order. Neither is lying; both are telling you about their schedule.
Production line structure. Some factories run dedicated lines per customer. Others mix styles through shared machine pools. Dedicated lines are more predictable; shared pools are cheaper but slower during peaks.

- Starting bulk before sample approval. The factory follows your written instruction. If you say “go” on a sample with pending changes, you own the result.

- Leaving trims until the end. Custom buttons and embroidered labels have their own lead times. Order them when you order the yarn, not when the garments are finished.
