GG stands for gauge. In knitwear manufacturing, GG is the number of needles per inch on the bed of a flat knitting machine — it’s how factories write machine size on a spec sheet. A 7GG machine has seven needle positions per inch; a 12GG machine has twelve. Lower GG numbers mean fewer, thicker needles, which knit a chunkier, more open fabric. Higher numbers mean more, finer needles, which knit a denser, finer fabric. The gauges you’ll meet most in sourcing are 3GG, 5GG, 7GG, 9GG, 12GG, 14GG, and 16GG. When a quotation says “12GG,” it’s telling you which machine the style runs on — and that one number does more to shape the finished garment’s weight, handfeel and drape than almost anything else.
what GG stands for and what the number measures
GG is short for gauge, and it’s a machine measurement, not a garment measurement.
Picture a flat knitting machine. The bed is a long steel plate with parallel grooves, and each groove holds one needle. Machine builders space those grooves a fixed distance apart, and the spacing is set when the machine is made. Count the grooves in one inch of the bed and you have the gauge.
So a 3GG machine has three needle positions per inch. The needles are thick, and they can handle heavy yarn. An 18GG machine packs eighteen needles into the same inch, so the needles are thin and the yarn has to be thin with them.
GG describes the machine, not the stitches in the finished fabric. Stitch length, yarn and finishing move the actual stitches-per-inch within a range. But the machine sets what kind of fabric a style can be — no tension setting turns a 12GG machine into a chunky 3GG knit.
Hand knitters use “gauge” to mean stitches per inch in a finished swatch. On a factory sheet, GG means machine needle density. Don’t mix the two when you compare specs.

the gauge scale, 1.5GG to 18GG
Think of the gauge range as a line from coarse to ultra-fine. Across the Dalang/Dongguan knitwear cluster in Guangdong, 1.5GG to 18GG is the standard working range on flat knitting machines. Most sourcing decisions land on 7GG, 9GG or 12GG, with 14GG and 16GG common for fine summer knits.

You’ll also see GG written as “G” or “gauge” on older sheets — same meaning. None of these gauges competes with another: a 3GG cardigan for winter and a 14GG knit polo for spring can sit in the same collection.
why GG matters when you source knitwear
GG drives the physical product. It decides the look, weight, handfeel, drape and what the style is suitable for. A 12GG knit layers under tailoring; a 3GG knit carries its own volume.
GG also moves cost. Coarse gauges use heavier yarns and more grams per garment. Fine gauges knit more slowly because every square inch has more stitches. That cost difference is part of what drives a knitwear MOQ when you’re planning small first runs.
Most importantly, GG is one of the first specs a custom knitwear manufacturer needs from you. The factory can’t choose yarn, calculate yarn consumption or quote accurately without it. Write “fine knit” on a tech pack and you’ve said almost nothing. Write “12GG” and the factory knows which machine, which yarn family and roughly how many grams the style will use.
GG is not a quality rating. A 7GG sweater isn’t “better” than a 12GG sweater — it’s different: heavier, more textured and right for a different set of styles. “Fine” doesn’t mean higher quality any more than “chunky” means lower. Treat GG as a size scale.

GG and yarn have to match
Gauge and yarn count are two halves of one decision. Yarn count tells you how thick the yarn is; GG tells you how thick the yarn can be.
Fine 2/48 Nm merino won’t knit properly on a 3GG machine — the stitches have nothing to hold onto and the fabric collapses. A thick yarn won’t feed through a 16GG machine at all; needles jam and break. Matching them is a production rule, not a preference. what GG does to the finished product
Knit the same crewneck pattern at 7GG and 12GG and you get two different products. The 12GG version is lighter and smoother: compact surface, closer to the body, an easy year-round layer. The 7GG version is heavier with more body and loft: visible stitches, fabric that stands away from the body, a winter sweater. They’re not two grades of the same garment.
GG also sets limits on what stitches and patterns work. Cables and chunky ribs need open gauge so thick yarn has room to read. Flat jacquard, fine stripes and small motifs suit fine gauge, where the surface stays smooth. Design the style first, then pick the gauge that can knit it.
how to specify GG when you talk to a factory
You don’t need to memorize a gauge chart to have this conversation. Two routes cover almost every project:
- You have a reference garment. Send it to the factory. It can measure the knitted fabric, identify the machine gauge and usually the yarn count, then confirm both before sampling.
- You’re designing from scratch. Describe what you want: season, silhouette, target weight, handfeel — “heavy winter sweater that keeps its shape” or “light summer knit that drapes.” The factory maps that onto a gauge and recommends one.
Then ask the direct question: “What gauge do you recommend for this style?” A factory that answers with a reason — weight, yarn, structure — is telling you how it would actually produce the style. Lock the answer into the spec sheet alongside yarn count, stitch structure and grams per garment. common misconceptions about GG
- “Higher GG means better quality.” No. GG is a machine size, not a grade. A 3GG chunky knit and an 18GG fine knit are different products, not better and worse versions of one.
- “GG is fabric thickness by itself.” Not quite. Stitch length, yarn and finishing change how dense the fabric actually is; the same gauge can knit tighter or looser.
- “Higher GG means softer.” Softness comes mainly from fiber. A 7GG merino can be softer than a 12GG synthetic blend.
- “GG is stitches per inch in the garment.” GG is needles per inch on the machine bed. Finished stitches per inch shift with loop length, so the two are related but not identical.
