3GG and 7GG are the two heavy gauges a brand reaches for when a sweater has to feel substantial, but they knit different garments. 3GG is the extreme chunky end: very thick yarn, large open stitches, a garment with real mass and a hand-knit look. 7GG is the classic heavy-sweater gauge: substantial, but denser, more structured and more commercially versatile. 3GG is a statement gauge. 7GG is the workhorse of heavy knitwear. 3GG is the gauge for texture that carries a whole style: cables and ribs come out exaggerated and bold, and even a plain knit reads as a design feature.

3GG: the statement gauge
3GG is for products where the chunky look is the reason the customer buys: heavy oversized sweaters, hand-knit look pieces, boxy cardigans, exaggerated cable and rib statements, thick vests, chunky zip-throughs. Brands use it when the garment has to be the loudest piece on the rail.
7GG: the workhorse of heavy knitwear
7GG is the gauge most heavy-sweater programs are built on: classic crewneck pullovers, aran and cable styles, heavyweight cardigans, turtlenecks and relaxed-but-tidy winter fits. It feels like a winter sweater and still holds a clean shape, so it carries classic and oversized silhouettes in one collection.
pattern and artwork limits at 3GG and 7GG
At 3GG, fine detail isn’t available. A small jacquard motif turns into loose colour blocks, lettering has to be very large to stay readable, and a delicate cable pattern reads as a lump. Design bold instead: wide ribs, big cables, heavy colour blocks, large-scale graphics.
7GG carries more: jacquard knits properly, classic cable patterns read the way they’re drawn, stripes hold a clean edge and moderate lettering is possible. Thin line work and tiny motifs are still out of range. The rule for both: simplify the artwork as the gauge gets coarser and redraw detail at the size of a stitch. Anything thinner than one stitch won’t survive production.
choosing between 3GG and 7GG: a decision framework
Work through these seven questions and the gauge usually picks itself.
- How chunky is the look you’re selling? If the big stitch is the product, 3GG. If you want weight without the extreme look, 7GG.
- Is the silhouette oversized or classic? Boxy shapes lean 3GG. A mix of oversized and classic fits leans 7GG.
- How much structure do you need? Clean collars, flat plackets and ribs that hold their line point to 7GG. A soft, slouchy shape points to 3GG.
- How heavy can the garment be for your customer? 3GG garments are heavy, which affects shipping and how the piece feels on the body. Tight limits point to 7GG.
- What price point are you building to? 3GG drinks yarn. If the target price can’t carry the yarn bill, 7GG or 9GG is the realistic answer.
- Is fine detail part of the design? Jacquard, small motifs and lettering need 7GG. Bold cables, wide ribs and large graphics suit 3GG.
- What does your reference garment show? Weight, handfeel and stitch size tell the factory which gauge family it belongs to.

With a reference garment, send it — technicians measure the fabric and stitch structure and can identify the gauge, and usually the yarn count, before anything is knitted. Designing from scratch? One warning about switching. A style translated from 7GG to 3GG changes completely: yarn, grams, stitch size, measurements, trims and handfeel all move. A sample that worked at 7GG tells you little about the same drawing at 3GG. Treat it as new development.
